Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why Does Vision
World Wide Exist?
Vision World Wide
provides medical information and emotional encouragement to the
vision impaired and their families, serves as a communication link
between the vision impaired and their caregiving community, serves as
a consumer protection organization against unscrupulous predators who
victimize, plunder, or otherwise prey upon unsuspecting and
uninformed victims of vision loss, and aims to enlighten the general
public about issues, trends and treatments related to vision
loss.
2. Why Did Vision
World Wide Get Started?
Because of the
founder's personal experience with the trauma of going from perfect
sight to total deaf-blindness in a three-month period at age 16,
followed by some 22-25 years of coping with total blindness and
severe hearing loss (only helped with hearing instruments) during
which time she completed high school, secured a college education,
and achieved permanent employment. Consequently, she understood the
fear and anxiety others feel when vision loss occurs and wanted to do
all she could to help everyone know there is hope when vision
fails.
With the graying of
the population, vision loss has reached epidemic proportions.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration alone has already made 1.7 million
sufferers legally blind and in just 20 years some 6 million more are
expected to go blind. Knowing what to do to enhance everyday living
even with vision loss is crucial to individuals maintaining their
independence and meaningful lifestyle. She believes she can and is
making a significant difference in helping those with failing
eyesight overcome the frustrations, develop the necessary coping
skills, and accept the challenges life has to offer.
Throughout her entire
vocational life, vacation and personal days were devoted to volunteer
work in the blindness community, state-wide, national, and
international. Naturally, this volunteerism continued following early
retirement due to cancer radiation treatment side-effects. Many
colleagues and subscribers to her journalistic endeavors through the
years encouraged her to expand her work. Thus, Vision World Wide,
Inc. was born.
