Overcoming Macular Degeneration: A Guide to Seeing Beyond the Clouds

Each year, more than 400,000 Americans are diagnosed with macular degeneration, an age-related, progressive eye disease that immediately raises a fear of total blindness. The good news is: YOU ARE NOT GOING BLIND. However, you are dealing with a disease that causes serious visual impairment - an inconvenience the author, Dr. Yale Solomon, has become personally familiar with since he was diagnosed in one eye in 1990 and the other in 1997. Now, in his book published February 2000, this respected ophthalmologist offers a compassionate and understanding look at both the medical and human side of macular degeneration and ways to meet the challenge of its impact on everyday life. Chapters include:

  • What exactly is macular degeneration?
  • The importance of monitoring the disease.
  • Steps that can be taken to slow the progression.
  • Risk factors associated with the disease.
  • How to find and work with a low-vision specialist.
  • Getting the most out of visual rehabilitation.
  • Driving tips, helpful devices, and other aids.
  • Adapting your home for easier living.
  • Tips on maximizing your sight.
  • The best diet and nutritional supplements for eye health.
  • The latest medical and technological advances.
  • And much more!

The book also includes a comprehensive appendix of associations, organizations and foundations, large-print publishers, audiotape and videotape resources, and a helpful list of suppliers of products and services.

Overcoming Macular Degeneration: A Guide to Seeing Beyond the Clouds is available free of charge on cassette from the National Library Service Talking Book Program through its network of regional libraries - Book: RC-51826 or from the Kentucky Library for the Blind - Book Ky-BPH (KY 2348).

Reader's Digest Electronic Braille Edition

In addition to cassette and Braille editions, Reader's Digest is now available from the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) in an electronic Braille edition. Reader's Digest Electronic Braille Edition provides the entire contents of Reader's Digest on a single 3.5-inch, MS-DOS-formatted disk in translated grade II Braille files (compared to three volumes in hard copy Braille).

The electronic Braille edition is intended for use on Braille-capable computer equipment such as the Braille 'n Speak, Braille Lite, VersaBraille, or a personal embossing device. Each issue comes with MS-DOS-based software to transfer the files from the PC to the Braille-capable device. The files are translated grade II Braille, just like the hard copy.

If the reader already owns an IBM-compatible disk drive for his/her Braille-capable device, he/she can place the disk directly into that drive. If not, he/she will need a computer and a serial cable to connect the computer to the Braille device. APH does not supply the serial cable, but the manufacturer of the Braille-capable device can provide one.

Reader's Digest Electronic Braille Edition makes it possible for the Braille user to easily skip through sections of the magazine or to search for interesting words or phrases. This edition also makes it quick and easy for the user to return to the table of contents and select articles of interest. Cost: $25 per year - 12 Issues.

APH is now accepting subscriptions for this electronic Braille version of Reader's Digest. Just call the Circulation Department: 800-223-1839.
